Are games crisis proof?

by Federico Fasce on January 12, 2009

A lot of analysts are saying that the game industry is quite recession proof.
Satoru Iwata, president of Nintendo, is enjoying the very good results obtained by the new Nintendo DSi in Japan (500000 units in the first month). He seems to agree with the analysts:

It seems more and more people are enjoying games instead of travelling or eating out to save money. Sales of the Wii video game console and Nintendo DS portable video game player have exceeded our expectations so far.

Yes, this is more about games than about playful design. But think about it. An application which is useful and fun to use has a lot more chances to stand the recession. People will stick to it.

About Nintendo DSi, it seems a really lovely piece of hardware. It has connectivity and you can download content. From the words of Iwata:

Nintendo DSi, the latest version of the DS series, was launched in November and sold 500,000 units in the first month. The product includes new functions such as a camera and the ability to download software through the Internet to customize it for the individual. We hope this will create a trend in which each family member will have his or her own DSi with their favorite software installed.

Now, I’m thinking. Probably this device will make converge even more the web world and the game world. I’m pretty excited.
